"Shahzia Sikander at Sharjah Biennial 11" by Ernesto Neto and Other Artists - Art 21
I have seen some of these works before, and have always thought they were very eloquent and well put together with an element of grace…
The invitation to interact and explore the work is a really lovely aspect.
My favorite in the video is the title “While Culture Pulls Apart, Nature Brings Us Together”
They sit inside this dome structure with arches around, a structure of a mosque, with a hanging element in the middle with melting ice. He explicitly says that he is interested in the fact that everyday someone there must “feed the piece” and put ice in it and therein lie the labor of doing that they must work together to feel the artwork. I think that must be the most important element of the piece for me in concept, asking everyone to nurture an art piece; is an act of bringing the community together, a collective goal that benefits them all.
And this green space in the middle, that connects us to nature, with benches around to appreciate the center and meditate on the art work. He also says he see the arches and green space and the water, as all connected intertwining elements of the piece and this is unifying for him. This art seems very inviting, asking you to meditate almost, come to a moment of appreciation to be in tune with the space the sculpture holds and to experience it not only as living and living within it, but also be one with it and learn from it at the same time. Lovely!
