ANGELA CLIFFORD & KAZ HUETTE "COMMON THREADS" at Groundswell in Sacramento

March-April 2021
at Groundswell Gallery on 731 16th St #118, Sacramento, CA 95814

This is a sculptural show with a collection of three dimensional wall hangings made of wood an knit fabric. The material used in the show is manipulated into weavings and knots that hang from long wooden logs in a variety of ways. I saw this show when it opened early March, and while it looks simplistic and beautiful on the wall it is devoid of any color, and any bold choice. The most enjoyable works were the ones that had some irregularity to the knitting and threads. However I feel this artist took a very over done motif of Pinterest art, attractive wall hangers, changed the proportion of the thread and  labeled it fine art. It seemed to lack deeper thought in relationship to the lack of color, and variety of line work. There was no consideration of the heavy importance of weaving and its historical context, nor was there enough variation to justify meaning or importance either. A nominally boring show, while pretty and aesthetically satisfying, lacked enough depth to keep me engaged or even in the gallery. I look forward to critiquing the next show at groundswell hoping it gives me a more satiating experience.
