Kelly Lindner- CSUS Artist Lecture "How's you get to be a Curator anyway?"

Kelly's initial explanation of people general understanding of curators, resonates with my recent experiences with stepping into my professional life in the art world. There is a glossed over experiences, where the general public does always associate what happens behind the scenes or how the information and the art come together, the place where her job starts.

Her admittance that she did not take studio art, and that her first experience with watching a work in progress was at Smith College. I think that's bold, in the sense that as a listener i now know her experience and path differs form mine, i am happy she admitted that the process floored her. I also really appreciated her sharing a snippet from an art critic, a career path the intersects the art world and perceives it, Art critic is a path i have considered before as well.

I enjoyed hearing about the Linda Dunham Gallery, it was nice to to know what a Studio Visit was in her eyes, and explain the one on one talk with and artist and how important it is. This is something i have done with local artist recently and have gleamed far more information form it than i could have imagined. Its also goo to know that getting to know work intimately and convey its complexity to viewers that are not art enthusiasts is an invaluable skill and one would do good to strengthen it.

Another thing i really wanted to note from her lecture is the mention that every gallery has a different "aesthetic" or mode of what they look for and knowing this and responding to it can be valuable as some who applies for shows, and understand what you want from a show or experience.

The living room feels like a good reminder that there are many ways to show work, in and outside of the commercial realm, in underground spaces.

What i collected from all of Kelly Lindners experiences is that a constant and persistent work ethic and climb through the art world is a strong base for creating a career in the art community.  I feel like i have already been following this model and it reassures me that this ability to focus your attention on what you want your career to look like, to take the opportunities that come from doing a good job and create strong experiences for people will lead a fruitful life in the art world.

I also think its an immense skill to be the person who find work to guide an exhibition to help convey the essence of what a gallery is looking for, and to know that work, seek it out and get it in the gallery or museum.

Here I  have learned that audience, location, accessibility are always in the balance when showing work anywhere. The importance of understanding these things responding to them, and utilizing the message, the vibe, the theme of a space and the work can be the end point of effectiveness of a work of art, in a show and in running a successful gallery or museum.
